darker than black ends

time: 23.30pm

And so ends Darker than Black, a anime that i began before my exams, forced myself to stop watching at episode 12 and finally finished it to episode 25 today.

The ending was bittersweet, so unlike alot of animes. No loud bangs and explosions, just a quiet reflective end to all the chaos. People came and left and many of the main characters perished. I loved how each character was given a chance to develop, so much so that we see beyond the inhuman dolls and unfeeling contractors. yin and Hei must be my favourite characters, and i especially loved the scene where Hei sat next to Kirihara. Their sincere conversation and idle activities despite the harsh reality of Hei's true identity. The shot of their hands, so close yet never touching just made me so sad. :( I think the last few episodes really wrapped it up very nicely.

In a world where the real stars have disappeared because of the appearance of a hell gate, contractors and humans live along side. Organisations from both sides attempt to eliminate the other. Contractors are people with special abilities, supposedly incapable of feeling and only rational thinking. Every time a contractor dies, a star falls from the sky. Hei is a contractor, living by the rules of his organisation, but sometimes in conflict with his emotional self, something uncharacteristic of a contractor. And his true identity kind of surprised me at the end. As the story went on, i really grew to like other contractors like November 11, but he died. :( that really tore me up. sigh

I bet no one has a idea what the hell i am talking about. haha. I've no idea how anime managed to capture my imagination in this way. Not all types, but those that speak of a world that does not exist in ours.

I dont think there will be a part 2 to it, but while it lasted, i loved it. :)
